Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how the Skaneli mobile application (the “App”) and related services collect, use, disclose, and retain information.
Important: photos you choose to scan are sent to our servers and an artificial intelligence service so that Skaneli can recognize, translate, and convert the information in the image. Avoid photographing people, payment cards, identity documents, or other sensitive or unnecessary personal information.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is Aleksei Gorkov, an individual developer operating Skaneli in his own name (referred to as “Skaneli,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). There is no separate legal entity operating the App.
Privacy requests and questions: alex@skaneli.com.
2. Information we process
Photos and scan content
When you actively take a photo for scanning, the App processes the image and sends it, together with your selected scan language and currency options, to our servers. We then send the image and instructions to one of the AI providers listed below to recognize prices or products, translate text, and return a result. A photo may contain personal information if you include it in the frame.
Skaneli does not store scan images in its application database and does not use them to build advertising profiles or train a Skaneli model. The image is processed for the requested scan. Infrastructure and AI providers may temporarily process or retain content and related security logs under their applicable API terms and account settings.
Pseudonymous device and service records
We process:
- a randomly generated user identifier that is not based on your name or email;
- device platform and device-integrity or trust status;
- authentication token records, token status, and timestamps;
- available scan credits, credit type, and credit update timestamps; and
- IP address, request headers, and basic network or server logs created when you connect to the service.
On supported Apple devices, Apple DeviceCheck is used to help verify device integrity and prevent repeated bonus or credit abuse. Skaneli does not require you to create an account with your name, phone number, or email address.
Preferences
Your interface language, system locale, scan language, base currency, and likely currency are stored on your device. Some of these values are also associated with your pseudonymous analytics profile so we can understand which configurations need support.
Usage analytics and diagnostics
We use Mixpanel to process product-use and diagnostic events such as screens viewed; scan type, status, and duration; recognized item count; result currency; AI provider/model and token counts; remaining credits; and technical error details. Error details may include an error message, stack trace, request path, HTTP status, or server error response. Mixpanel may also process device and network metadata made available by its SDK, including IP-derived coarse location. We do not use advertising SDKs or track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Messages you send us
If you contact us by email, we process your email address, the content of your message, and any information you choose to include so we can reply and provide support.
3. Why we process information
- Provide the requested service: perform scans, recognition, translation, currency conversion, authentication, and credit management. The legal basis is performance of our agreement with you or taking steps at your request.
- Secure and operate Skaneli: verify device integrity, prevent abuse, investigate errors, maintain reliability, and enforce service limits. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in protecting and operating the service and, where applicable, compliance with legal obligations.
- Improve the product: understand feature use and performance during development. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving Skaneli.
- Communicate with you: answer support, privacy, and beta-access requests. The legal basis is responding to your request, performance of our agreement, or our legitimate interest in supporting users.
Camera access is requested through your device’s permission system and is used only when you choose to scan. You can revoke camera permission in your device settings, but scanning will then be unavailable.
4. Service providers and disclosures
We disclose information only as needed to operate Skaneli, comply with law, protect rights and safety, or complete a business transfer. Our current categories of service providers include:
- Google Cloud and Firebase — hosting, server functions, operational logging, and infrastructure (privacy information);
- Cloudflare — network proxying, delivery, and security (privacy policy);
- Mixpanel — product analytics and diagnostics (privacy policy);
- Apple — DeviceCheck integrity verification on supported Apple devices (privacy policy);
- OpenAI, Google Gemini, and OpenRouter — AI image and text processing. A scan is normally routed to one provider, but a different provider may be tried if processing fails (OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter).
These providers act under their service terms and data-protection commitments. We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising.
5. International transfers
Skaneli and its providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live, including the United States and countries where the providers maintain facilities. Where required, transfers are supported by appropriate safeguards such as data processing terms, the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, an applicable adequacy decision, or another lawful transfer mechanism.
6. Retention and deletion
- Scan images: Skaneli does not persist them in its application database. They are held only as needed to complete the request. AI and infrastructure providers may retain content or logs for limited security, abuse-prevention, or legal periods under the relevant service configuration and terms.
- Pseudonymous identifiers, credit records, and token metadata: retained while needed to provide credits, authenticate the device, prevent abuse, and maintain service integrity, or until a valid deletion request, unless law or a security need requires longer retention.
- Analytics and technical logs: retained according to our project and infrastructure retention settings for as long as reasonably needed to understand product use, diagnose incidents, and secure the service, then deleted or aggregated.
- Support emails: retained while needed to resolve the request and maintain an appropriate support or legal record.
We may preserve limited information when required by law, to establish or defend legal claims, or to prevent fraud and abuse.
7. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or portability of your personal information; withdraw consent where processing relies on it; and appeal or complain to your local data-protection authority.
To exercise a right, email alex@skaneli.com. Because Skaneli does not ask for your name or email when creating its pseudonymous service record, we may need information from the App or your device to locate the correct record and verify the request. We will not ask for more information than reasonably necessary. You may also delete local preferences by removing the App and manage camera access in device settings.
An automated integrity check may affect initial credits or service limits when a device cannot be verified. It does not produce legal or similarly significant effects. Contact us if you believe the result is incorrect and want a review.
8. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encrypted network transmission, access controls, token-based authentication, and data minimization. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
9. Children
Skaneli is a general travel utility and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child who cannot lawfully provide it without parental consent. If you believe a child has submitted personal information, contact us so we can review and delete it as appropriate.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Skaneli changes or legal requirements develop. We will post the revised policy on this page, update the date above, and provide additional notice when required.
